German-American relations matter to me because it means…

… attending the Brooklyn Book Festival and listening to Qian Julie Wang and feeling, breathing every word while she describes her experiences and struggles growing up as an Asian American woman (#connection).

… having a random conversation with the Fort Greene Park guard about the reasons foreigners are attracted to the US (becoming rich mainly?!), the uniqueness of New York City, and the Dutch banning farming due to emissions cuts (#conversations).

… understanding that failing is a necessary part of a process and not something that should be condemned (#entrepreneurship).

… having yet another random conversation with a police officer about transatlantic relations but this time focusing on trade (#perspectives).

… following the US economy and Fed’s decisions to fully capture and understand the global economy and its drivers (#economy).

… joining the FinTech Leaders Conference and discussing why and how the German #fintech startups enter the US market, while meeting fascinating women like Christiana Riley, Scarlett Sieber, Leitha Matz or Yeliz Atak and many, many more (#bettertogether).

… discussing water storage and production over delicious Georgian food with an inspiring American friend – thanks Faruk Mermertaş for connecting us!! (#environment).

… sharing my educational experience at the University of Cologne with young Americans during the Career Booster event at Goethe-Institut New York - thanks Eva Bosbach (#educationalexchange).

However, it also means

… taking a pic at the Williamsburg Bridge while pretending to read a book - thanks Akilnathan Logeswaran!! 📖

… strolling through Times Square and questioning if you ever wanna walk through it again - you certainly do. ✨

… observing the crazy costumes during Halloween and asking yourself what or who you wanna be next year. 🎃

… and sipping on my PSL (=Pumpkin Spice Latte) while enjoying my Pumpkin Spice Muffin after having had Pumpkin Soup with Pumpkin Spice Bread. 🍂

… indulging in a delectable egg tart while strolling around Chinatown. 🐉

Older generations have a different connection and purpose to enhance German-American relations. The rapid development of digital platforms and increased diversity within our societies on both sides of the Atlantic are changing this relationship. Each one of us has a different, fascinating story behind their connection. However, our stories share common values and ideas.

This is my story.

Thank you Steven E Sokol for the stimulating conversation.
